As the crisp autumn air settles in and the leaves start to fall, most homeowners are focused on pumpkin decor and raking their yards. But there’s something sneaky that may be settling in overhead: roof mold. Yes, fall is prime time for mold to make itself at home on your shingles, and ignoring it could lead to bigger (and more expensive) problems down the road.

Let’s break down what roof mold is, why it thrives in the fall, and what you can do to kick it to the curb before it spreads.

Why Fall Is Mold’s Favorite Season

Mold is a fungus that loves moisture, shade, and organic debris - all of which come together perfectly during autumn in New England. Here’s why:

  • Falling Leaves: Leaves that land on your roof can trap moisture and block sunlight, creating damp, shaded pockets where mold thrives.

  • Cooler Temperatures: As temperatures drop, homeowners may not notice excess moisture buildup because it’s not evaporating as quickly.

  • Shorter Days: Less sunlight means less natural drying power for your roof.

  • Clogged Gutters: Leaf-filled gutters lead to poor drainage and water pooling on the roof. Mold eats this up, literally.

What Mold Does to Your Roof (It’s Not Just Ugly)

Roof mold might seem like just a cosmetic issue, until it isn’t. Here’s what can happen if mold takes hold:

    Leaves, twigs, and debris are mold’s favorite housewarming gifts. Clear your roof and gutters regularly, especially after a big wind or rainstorm.

  2. Check Your Attic Ventilation
    Poor airflow in the attic can trap moisture and encourage mold growth from the inside out. Make sure vents are clear and consider installing an attic fan if airflow is limited.

  3. Trim Back Overhanging Branches
    Shade is great for picnics, not for roofs. Cutting back branches allows more sunlight to hit your roof and dry up any lingering moisture.

  4. Inspect for Leaks and Damaged Shingles

    Take a walk around your home and look for signs of water damage, cracked shingles, or dark streaks. If you spot anything suspicious, call in a pro.

  5. Consider Copper or Zinc Strips
    These metal strips, installed near the peak of your roof, naturally kill mold and algae as rainwater washes down over them. It’s a smart investment for long-term mold prevention.

  6. Book a Professional Roof Inspection
    Fall is an ideal time to have a professional take a look. They can spot early signs of mold or damage you might miss from the ground.

Tackling Humidity Hazards at Home

With a solid mix of heat, humidity, and rain so far this summer season, now is the perfect time to talk about what high moisture can do to your home. 

Let’s start with a bit of background on mold, which is the biggest threat to homes that hold a lot of humidity. Mold is made up of thousands of microscopic spores that travel through the air until they land on a surface. They love to live in places that hold water, which is why you often see mold growing on trees, roofs, and other places that stay warm and damp. Indoor mold generally develops after being carried in from the outdoors or because of a leak that hasn’t been remedied. Homes that tend to hold a lot of humidity are more susceptible to mold infestation, something that no homeowner wants to deal with. 

Many people can get sick from mold and mildew, especially children and the elderly. It grows and spreads incredibly quickly and cannot be contained without removing its food source, which is water. Once it settles inside a home, mold can cause illness, asthma, and a host of other respiratory issues that can affect a person’s health for life.

So how can you get rid of mold in your living space, or prevent it from making a home in yours? Here are my top tips.

  1. Run a dehumidifier in your basement constantly. I have an air-tight finished basement and I still run a dehumidifier 24/7. The goal here is to keep your air humidity at or below 50%. When it’s raining or super humid, don’t be surprised if you have to dump the water collection bucket twice a day. 

  2. Always use the extractor fan while showering or cooking. With so much water in the air from the weather, the last thing you want to do is add more moisture inside your home. Be sure that your fans vent outside, not in the attic. Otherwise, you’re just redirecting the moisture to another part of the house. 

  3. An air conditioner is not a dehumidifier. Yes it will remove some humidity but an air conditioner’s main function is to cool the air, rather than remove the water. If you find yourself running your A/C unit to control your humidity, you’re going to end up with an expensive energy bill and not too much to show for it.

  4. Store unused clothing and linens in airtight plastic. People often put winter clothes and bedding up in the attic, which can be a breeding ground for mold if the area is not ventilated properly. Keeping the attic vented is key, good airflow can slow or even prevent mold growth.

  5. Check the drainage around your home. Gutters should be clean and in working order and your landscaping should slope away from the foundation so you don’t have standing water at the base of your house. Make sure your downspouts extend at least four feet out and away from that foundation.

In short, a house with high humidity is nothing to ignore. If you suspect that your home might be susceptible to mold, it’s worth purchasing an inexpensive humidity gauge to find out. Remember, a mold problem can be a serious health risk to your family if not dealt with properly.

What’s Growing In Your Attic

This past week’s brutal temperatures had plenty of people thinking about the heat in their homes. While high energy bills, drafty windows, and cold floors are the obvious issues, what most homeowners don’t see is what’s causing the biggest problems in their homes. 

Most of the houses in our area are underinsulated and not properly ventilated. We all know from high school science class that heat rises, right? In a house, that means a good amount of heat makes its way up to the attic where it’s usually pretty cold. When warm and cold air collide, it creates moisture or condensation, which is the last thing you want up there. As an attic collects moisture, it adheres itself to any surface, which in an attic’s case is usually wood. That moisture becomes an ideal home for mold spores, which eat away at the plywood, causing it to rot. 

An attic that has enough insulation and ventilation allows air to flow through and temperature to regulate, which creates a healthy atmosphere and keeps a home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. A home without proper insulation and ventilation is susceptible to mold infiltration which will create rot, roof leaks, and can even become a potential health hazard in your home, especially for folks with asthma or allergies. 

So how do you know if your home has enough insulation and ventilation? A roofing contractor will be able to help you identify exactly what you need, but a good place to start is insulation. Insulation is measured by its R-Value, which is the level at which heat can penetrate it. According to EnergizeCT, the recommended R-Value for a home here in Connecticut is R38 to R60, which is roughly 12 inches thick at the low end of that range. If you can access your attic, you’ll be able to get an idea of your insulation situation. More than 75% of homes I visit don’t come close to an R-Value of 38, in fact, homes built before 1940 didn’t require insulation at all. Those built in the decades after usually have enough to be suitable for winter in Florida. 

A warm, energy-efficient, and healthy home always starts at the roof. Ensuring your home has enough insulation and ventilation is the best way to prevent bigger problems such as leaks from happening in the future. Plus, getting your home insulated and ventilated properly offers both tax credits and will immediately make a big difference in those energy bills. Don’t forget your family’s health as well. Illness from long-term exposure to mold is not something anyone wants to deal with.
