Don’t Overlook Those Downspouts During Fall Leaf Prep

Chelsea O'Donnell

If you’re a homeowner, chances are that leaf maintenance is in your very near future. With the beauty of autumn nearly always comes clogged gutters that when left uncleaned can make a big mess come winter. But while some people are excellent about keeping those gutter debris-free, it’s the often overlooked downspouts that can become compacted, leading to overflows in the gutters and potential leaks in the roof. So if you’ve never done it before, now is the perfect time to give those downspouts a good clean out and give yourself the peace of mind of a leak-free roof come fall.

A downspout is the most important part of your roof drainage system as it allows all the water that flows down into the gutters to move away from the foundation of the home. A properly installed gutter system will let rain and melted snow drain off the roof quickly, and the downspout will ensure that the water doesn’t land where it’s not supposed to. Without a downspout, gutters will overflow and run down into the home, causing leaks in the basement. If it’s winter and the snow and ice can’t move, the water will find itself a new home in your attic. Either of these scenarios is a major headache for a home owner, so don’t let it happen to you. Let’s clean those downspouts.

For this job, you’ll need a ladder, a scoop, a bag for debris, a cordless drill and a shovel or long handle about an inch wide. If you have a plumbing snake, that will work well too.

Always start by cleaning out the gutters first. Remove any old leaves and sticks with a scoop or by hand. Once you’ve cleaned the gutters, give them a rinse with the hose and keep an eye out for any leaks. Small issues can be caulked, but if you see a lot of leaking, you might need to call a professional in for a repair.

Next, make your way to the elbow of the gutter system where the main gutter meets the downspout. Back out the screws in the upper and lower parts of the elbow to remove the joining piece. Look to see if there is any debris caught and remove it with a strong water stream, the end of a shovel, or your plumbing snake. Then look down the barrel of the downspout to see if you can see light at the other end. Use the hose to clear any debris and check for back-ups. If dirt, leaves, and sticks have been compacted, use the end of the shovel to gently push the gunk out of the bottom of the downspout. Be careful and make sure you don’t damage or dent the pipe. I like to use the hose both on the top and bottom of the downspout to ensure it’s absolutely free and clear.

Once everything is cleaned out, you can screw the downspout back into place and do one final flush with the hose. Just remember, any home improvement projects involving a ladder can be dangerous, so make sure you’re on firm, steady ground and ask a friend for some help. If you’re not comfortable with heights, call a professional to do the cleaning for you. No DIY project is worth a trip to the emergency room.

Winter Activities for the Whole Family to Enjoy

Chelsea O'Donnell

With snow in the forecast, now is a great time to start thinking about some fun winter activities to get you and your family outside to enjoy the brisk but beautiful weather. Winter is my favorite season, and when I’m not enjoying a weekend on the slopes in Vermont, you can usually find me around town enjoying some of the best that our area has to offer. Here are some of my favorite things to do to beat the winter blues:

Mountain Biking. You might be thinking that mountain biking is better suited for spring or summer but new fat tire bikes are all the craze and they make for an awesome winter activity. Check out what Bikers Edge has to offer and then head down to my favorite spots, Sessions Woods on the Bristol/Burlington line or the West Hartford Reservoir for a ride. Both places have great tracks for beginners right through to advanced riders and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some of the area’s amazing wildlife.

Skiing. There is nothing like having fresh snow under your boards to make you fall in love with winter. You can usually catch me up at Killington, but if you’re looking for a local place to ski or snowboard, you can’t go past Mt. Southington which is in good shape with a dozen trails open and better conditions to come with snow heading our way. Ski Sundown in New Hartford is another great spot to check out. Both are perfect for children and first-time riders and boarders.

Hiking. For a slower pace activity, Sessions Woods and Talcott Mountain State Park offer beautiful hiking where you can enjoy amazing views and a great opportunity to connect with nature. Don’t be intimidated by the cold, a good pace and the warmth from the sun will have you working up a lather in no time!

Sledding. Anyone my age will remember many a winter barreling down Deadman’s Hill on just about anything we could find that would go fast! These days, sledding is still very popular in the area and  Page Park, Nelson’s Field, and Rockwell Park all have great areas for the kids to get their adrenaline pumping.

Ice Skating. When the local ponds freeze, ice skating is a great activity for the whole family. I love to pick up a hockey game, but just a leisurely cruise can be a whole lot of fun too. Rockwell Park is a great place to go and I love Malone’s Pond, also known as Pine Lake. Of course, ice skating can be a dangerous activity if the lakes aren’t frozen so be sure to check with the Park Department, who also builds a rink on Middle Street that’s safe for all to enjoy.

Make Your Own Activity. If you don’t feel like leaving home on a cold winter day, one of my favorite things to do is to light up the firepit with a crackling fire and have the family over for some hot chocolate and marshmallow roasting. On a chilly winter evening, there is nothing better than cozying up to a warm fire, laughing and telling stories with the people you love the most.

With that, I hope everyone has a very Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you in 2017!

Get Out of That Igloo This Winter

Chelsea O'Donnell

I have to admit that I’m a big fan of the winter. I love skiing, playing ice hockey and hiking in the snow, but what I don’t love is coming home to a cold house. It’s around this time of year when I start to get calls from people all over town wondering why their home is so drafty and freezing when they’re paying a fortune in heating bills. The answer to their question is almost always a lack of insulation. Unfortunately, over 75% of houses in our area are underinsulated, which means that heat is quite literally going through the roof.

Insulation is a cotton looking fiberglass material that often comes in pink or yellow colored rolls, or what we call “loose fill” which can be blown into harder to reach areas. Contractors use insulation between walls, in attics and in basements to retain heat in the house in the winter and keep it cooler in the summer. The amount of insulation needed for a home is measured by its R-Value, which equates to its resistance to heat moving through it. Simply put, the higher the R-Value, the better the insulating properties.

Back 50 years ago when many of the homes in the Bristol and Central Connecticut areas were built, R-Value wasn’t a popular unit of measurement. Instead, they kept it simple and measured insulation by its thickness in inches. When a home was constructed, the contractor would put about three inches of insulation into the attic, if any was used at all. Three inches of insulation would give that homeowner an R-Value of about R-10. According to EnergyStar, homes in our area should be fitted with insulation that measures between R-49 and R-60. So if you have a home from the 50’s or 60’s and have never done an upgrade to your insulation, your home is probably better equipped to deal with the South Florida sunshine than it is to handle our harsh Connecticut winters.

If you’re one of those homeowners scratching your head, trying to figure out why the house is so cold, take a trip up into the attic. Chances are your insulation isn’t up to scratch and it’s probably time for an upgrade. As a general guideline, insulation with an R-Value of between R-49 and R-60 will sit at between 19 and 22 inches thick when settled. How does your insulation stack up to that? If it doesn’t, you don’t have to worry - insulation is easy and inexpensive to install and has one of the highest resale values of any home improvement job going.

If your insulation is new and you’re still feeling the chill, the culprit could likely be your windows. We’ll talk about that next week!
