Getting Your Lawn Ready for Spring

Spring has officially arrived today and the first signs of the season are starting to show up in warmer weather, crocuses, and of course, bears. After a winter that brought its fair share of snow, ice, and temperature swings, your lawn has likely taken a bit of a beating.

The good news is that early spring is the perfect time to help your lawn recover and set it up for a healthy growing season. A little attention now can make the difference between a thin, patchy yard and a thick, green lawn you’ll enjoy all summer. Here are a few simple steps homeowners can take this time of year.

Start with a Soil Test

Before you rush out to buy fertilizer or grass seed, it’s smart to start with a soil test. Many homeowners skip this step, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for your lawn.

Grass grows best in soil with a pH between about 6.0 and 7.0. If your soil is too acidic or too alkaline, your lawn won’t absorb nutrients properly, no matter how much fertilizer you apply.

A simple soil test will tell you exactly what your lawn needs. Test kits are available at most garden centers and hardware stores, and some homeowners choose to have their soil professionally tested for even more detailed results.

Clean Up Winter’s Leftovers

Once the snow has melted and the ground begins to dry out, it’s time to clean up the yard. Winter tends to leave behind plenty of debris like fallen branches, leftover leaves, pine needles, and other material that can smother new grass growth.

Start by removing larger debris, then give the lawn a light raking. Even if the lawn looks fairly clean, raking helps loosen the layer of dead grass and organic material known as thatch.

A small amount of thatch is normal and even helpful in winter, but too much of it can block sunlight, water, and nutrients from reaching the soil.

Consider Aerating the Lawn

If your yard sees a lot of foot traffic or has heavy soil, spring can be a good time to aerate. Aeration involves creating small holes in the lawn that allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots more easily.

Over time, soil becomes compacted, especially after months of snow sitting on top of it. Aerating loosens the soil and encourages stronger root growth, which leads to healthier, more resilient grass.

Homeowners can rent an aerator for the day or hire a lawn care professional to take care of it.

Get Ahead of Weeds

One of the biggest lawn challenges each spring is crabgrass and other invasive weeds. The key to controlling them is prevention.

Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in early spring helps stop weed seeds from germinating before they become a problem. Timing matters with this step, so it’s worth asking your local garden center when conditions are right for your area.

When weeds are controlled early, your lawn has a much better chance to grow thick and healthy.

Fill in Thin or Bare Spots

Winter can leave lawns looking a little thin in places. Bare areas may appear where snow piles sat the longest or where grass struggled during colder months.

Early spring is a good opportunity to reseed those spots or overseed the entire lawn if it’s starting to look sparse. Choosing the right seed blend for your soil, sunlight conditions, and level of foot traffic will help the new grass establish more successfully.

Once seeded, keep the area consistently moist until the new grass begins to grow.

Give Your Lawn the Nutrients It Needs

After months of dormancy, grass benefits from a boost of nutrients. Applying fertilizer in early spring helps encourage new growth and strengthens the lawn heading into the warmer months.

The best fertilizer will depend on your soil conditions, which is another reason soil testing is so helpful. Using the right product ensures your lawn gets exactly what it needs without over-applying unnecessary nutrients.

Hold Off on the First Mow

Finally, one of the most common mistakes homeowners make each spring is mowing too early. It’s tempting to fire up the mower as soon as the grass starts growing, but allowing the lawn to grow a little taller early in the season actually helps build stronger roots. Longer grass also shades the soil, which can help reduce weed growth. A little patience here can pay off with a healthier lawn later in the season.

How to Spot Trouble with Your Chimney Before Fireplace Season

As the days get shorter and the air gets cooler, many homeowners look forward to that first cozy fire of the season. But before you strike a match, it’s important to make sure your chimney is in good working order. A damaged or blocked chimney doesn’t just reduce efficiency - it can create serious safety hazards, including chimney fires and carbon monoxide buildup. The good news? A little preventative maintenance now can save you from expensive repairs and dangerous situations later.

Here’s what to look for when checking your chimney this fall.

Cracks and Gaps in the Masonry

Start with a visual inspection. If you see crumbling mortar, missing bricks, or hairline cracks, that’s a sign your chimney is weakening. Water can seep into these gaps, freeze in the winter, and make the damage worse. Over time, this can compromise the entire structure. Small cracks can often be sealed, but larger problems usually require professional repair.

A Damaged Chimney Cap or Crown

Your chimney cap is the unsung hero of the fireplace system. It keeps out rain, snow, animals, and debris. Without it, your chimney can quickly become clogged or water-damaged. Similarly, the chimney crown - the cement slab at the very top - acts as a shield. If you notice rust on the cap or chips in the crown, it’s time to repair or replace before moisture finds its way inside.

Creosote Buildup

Even if the outside looks fine, the inside of your chimney can be another story. Burning wood produces a tar-like substance called creosote, which clings to the interior walls. Creosote is highly flammable, and too much of it can spark a chimney fire. If you notice a strong, smoky odor, or if you can see black, shiny buildup inside, schedule a professional cleaning before you use the fireplace again.

Signs of Water Damage

Look around the base of your chimney and inside your attic for water stains or dampness. Discoloration on ceilings and walls near the chimney can be a red flag. Water entering through cracks or missing flashing (the metal seal where the chimney meets the roof) can cause mold, rot, and costly structural issues.

While You’re Up There - Check Your Roof

Inspecting your chimney is also a great opportunity to take a quick look at your roof. Loose, curling, or missing shingles can lead to leaks that damage not only your chimney but your entire home. Shingle problems are easiest to fix when they’re caught early, so don’t wait until you see water spots inside your house to take action.

When to Call a Pro

Some issues, like trimming back tree branches or replacing a simple cap, may be safe for homeowners to tackle. But climbing on a roof always comes with risks, and chimney repairs often require professional tools and expertise. If you’re unsure about the condition of your chimney or roof, schedule an inspection with a qualified contractor. It’s a small investment that can prevent big problems down the line.

A healthy chimney doesn’t just make your fireplace more efficient; it keeps your family safe, too. Take a little time this season to inspect for cracks, damaged caps, creosote buildup, and signs of water leaks. And while you’re up there, give your roof a once-over, too. A careful check now means peace of mind when you’re enjoying those winter nights by the fire.

Gutter Maintenance for Fall

It may only be September but leaf maintenance season is right around the corner. Over the next two months, leaves, branches, and other debris will begin falling onto your roof and down into your gutters, building up over time. As winter approaches, this buildup can contribute to the formation of ice dams, a heavy mass of ice that settles onto the edge of your roof where the gutters are installed.

The main function of a gutter is to create a pathway for water to move away from your home and through a downspout to deposit in a safe place away from your home’s foundation. This system is vital to a house; it makes sure water can flow freely and not cause leaks in your roof, attic, and walls. But if your gutters are blocked up, the water has nowhere to go and will flow over, creeping up into your roof shingles and down through your siding. This kind of damage is both costly to repair and entirely preventable. 

To give your gutters a good clean you’ll need a ladder, a lawn bag or bucket, a small hand rake (or scoop) and a hose. Don’t be tempted to spray debris down the downspout with water; it’s likely that branches and leaves will get stuck inside, clogging it up and leaving you with a whole new mess to deal with.  Start at the downspout opening and work your way backward, collecting gunk away from the downspout and disposing it into your bucket. Work in small sections and don’t let your bag get too heavy – it could throw you off balance and land you in the emergency room. 

While you’re making your way around the house, check for any gutter damage, such as sections coming loose. You want to make sure you get those fixed while the weather is good. Once you’ve finished cleaning, you can give each section a good spray with the hose to check and make sure the water is running through and you don’t have any hidden build-up in those downspouts.

If gutter cleaning is a job you’d rather not take on, hire a contractor to complete the maintenance and then speak to them about putting gutter guards on your home. These wire or mesh overlays are installed on top of the gutter and prevent debris from entering the channel in the first place. They offer a great solution to a messy job and will provide you with peace of mind for years to come.
