Rebate Programs for Connecticut Home Improvements

If you’ve ever thought about renovating your home but you’re conscious about the planet, it’s worth making sure you’re up to speed on some of the rebates and incentives offered by EnergizeCT. As conscientious consumers, making smart decisions about your home remodeling while doing good for the planet is always a great idea. Here are some of the programs available this summer:

• Heat Pump: there are big savings for people looking to upgrade their heat and air conditioning. Work with a qualified contractor for your equipment and installation and you can get up to $15,000 in combined incentives.

• Pool Pumps: a summer of swimming is always fun but maintenance? Not so much. If you’re in the market for a new pool pump, Eversource customers can get a rebate of up to $100. The offer says you can save up to $290 a year in energy costs since the new ones use up to 18 percent less energy than a standard pump.

• Air Purifiers: these became a hot item after COVID and they continue to be popular amongst homeowners. You can snag $40 off a qualifying unit through the program and save money long-term too. ENERGY STAR® certified air purifiers are more than 25% more energy-efficient than standard models

• Dehumidifiers: during the summer months, I dump my basement dehumidifier twice a day. Excess moisture is a real problem in many homes and it can lead to mold and mildew if not dealt with. The average dehumidifier costs about $300 but you can get up to $25 off per qualifying unit with this incentive program

• Insulation: If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know how important having enough insulation is in the home. In addition to warmer winters and cooler summers, insulation is also a valuable improvement upon resale. You can get up to $1.70 per square foot for your insulation project which includes both batts and blown fiberglass. 

• Boilers and Furnaces: both of these essential appliances have a 20-year lifespan so if you’re coming to the end of yours, taking advantage of the rebate is a good idea. You can get up to $750 back if you choose an energy-efficient model and there is financing available too. 

• Thermostats: I love being able to set and adjust the temperature of my house from anywhere and it’s great for the planet too. Choose a Smart thermostat like Google Nest and get an $85 instant rebate. Plus they estimate energy savings of up to $180 on electric and $565 on gas.

Five DIY Home Improvement Projects for Summer

If you’re looking for a few easy ways to give your house a facelift this summer, there are several projects that can make a big difference on a relatively small budget. Warmer weather generally makes these kinds of jobs easier so it’s a good idea to start planning now. Here are five of my favorite DIY improvements. 

1. Exterior Refresh: Refreshing the exterior of your home with a new coat of paint can make a significant difference in its appearance. Of course, painting the entire house isn’t exactly an easy job and will depend on the house's condition and the homeowner’s skill and experience. A front door spruce-up or shutter refresh can be a great place to start as well as a powerwash of the entire exterior.

2. Landscaping and Garden Improvements: Take advantage of the warm weather to spruce up your yard and garden. Trim overgrown bushes and trees, weed the flower beds, and plant new flowers or shrubs to add color and vibrancy. Installing a simple DIY pathway using gravel, stepping stones, or mulch can also enhance the overall appeal of your outdoor space.

3. Outdoor Lighting: Upgrade your outdoor lighting to create a welcoming ambiance and improve safety. Install solar-powered lights along pathways, around the porch, or in the garden. You can also consider string lights or lanterns to add a cozy and festive touch to your outdoor living areas.

4. Kitchen Backsplash: Adding or updating a backsplash in your kitchen can instantly transform the area. If you have a smaller space, visit a local tile outlet center to score a great deal on leftovers from a bigger job. This renovation can give your kitchen a fresh and updated look without breaking the bank.

5. Bathroom Updates: Refreshing your bathroom doesn't have to be expensive. Consider replacing old faucets, showerheads, or cabinet hardware to give the space a modern touch. Re-caulking the bathtub or shower, adding a new shower curtain, and installing a fresh mirror can also make a significant difference.

Remember, even though these renovations are relatively inexpensive, it's important to set a budget and plan accordingly. DIY projects can save money, but it's essential to have the necessary skills and tools for the task at hand. Also, if you’re making improvements to put a home on the market, be sure to stick with neutral colors and patterns. Bold, bright, and busy tend to turn people off if they don’t have your same tastes and preferences.

Backyard Fences Are a Smart Investment

Having a comfortable, enjoyable backyard is one of my favorite parts of being a homeowner. After a long day or week, it’s fantastic to relax and enjoy a barbecue dinner, a swim in the pool, or a glass of wine by the fire pit. But having an at-home retreat also means taking steps to ensure that the backyard is private and secure, especially when there is a pool or water feature involved. So today, I’d like to give you a peek into a range of fencing options to protect your yard and provide seclusion without forgoing great design.

Many homeowners love the aesthetic of a beautiful, timeless wood fence. They look elegant, provide fantastic privacy, and are easy to install. The downside, of course, is maintenance. With our hot summers and brutal winters, a wood fence will need regular staining or painting, a job that every homeowner dreads. On the positive side, if you like to update the look of your backyard frequently, wood can be painted in any color imaginable and it’s one of the most affordable options on the market. A six-foot panel will run around $25-$50 depending on the type of wood.

If you love the look of wood, but the upkeep has you thinking twice about the material, you might want to think about composite fencing. Composite is made from engineered wood, and while it mimics the look of natural stuff, its lifespan is much longer with very few maintenance requirements.  The cost will vary based on the design and type, but you can expect to pay $100-$150 per six-foot section.

If you want something that’s sturdy and maintenance-free, a chain-link fence might be a good option for you. While they generally aren’t the most stylish in terms of design, a chain link fence will keep your backyard protected and they can be slightly customized in different colors and gauges. If you need more privacy, you can upgrade a chain link fence with metal slats. Best of all, it’s the cheapest of options, coming in at $100 or less for a 50-foot roll. If you like the idea of a metal fence but prefer something a little more upscale, go for an aluminum option, which is powder-coated and needs very little maintenance. A six-foot panel will run you $50-$75 depending on the height.

Finally, if you want something that will protect your pool without making it feel enclosed, there’s nothing like glass. A glass or plexiglass panel fence is beautiful for enclosing water without shutting out the rest of your property. Glass fences are durable, but they do tend to scratch easily and need to be cleaned regularly. They are also generally the most expensive fencing option, especially if they need to enclose a large area or in-ground pool. You’ll be looking in the ballpark of a few hundred dollars per panel.
