How to Improve Indoor Air Quality During Pollen Season

Spring in Connecticut is a beautiful thing with longer days, blossoming trees, and the long-awaited return of greenery. But if your eyes are watering, your nose is running, and you feel like you’re living in a cloud of dust, you’re not imagining it. Tree pollen is heavy right now across the state, and it’s taking a toll on our sinuses, our sleep, and even our mood.

What many people don’t realize is that spring allergies aren’t just an outdoor problem. Pollen doesn’t politely stay outside. It hitches a ride on your clothes, shoes, pets, and open windows, settling in your carpets, upholstery, and air ducts. The result? Your indoor air can be just as allergy-triggering as the great outdoors. Fortunately, a few smart strategies can dramatically improve your home’s air quality and help you breathe easier this season.

1. Invest in a High-Quality Air Purifier

One of the most effective ways to combat indoor allergens like pollen is to use a HEPA air purifier. These devices are designed to trap particles as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust, and pet dander. Place a purifier in high-traffic areas, such as the living room or bedroom, and keep it running continuously during peak pollen season. If you have allergy sufferers at home, consider one for each bedroom.

Bonus tip: Look for purifiers with activated carbon filters to reduce odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can further irritate sensitive airways.

2. Keep Windows Closed (Sorry, We Know)

There’s nothing more tempting than cracking open a window on a sunny spring day. But during high pollen days, open windows are like rolling out the red carpet for allergens. Use air conditioning instead, and make sure your HVAC system is fitted with a high-efficiency filter (MERV 11 or higher is ideal). Don’t forget to change it every 1-2 months during allergy season.

3. Do the “Pollen Peel-Off” at the Door

Designate a “drop zone” near your entryway where family members can leave shoes, jackets, and bags. This helps prevent pollen from being tracked deeper into your home. If you’ve been outside for a while, especially after a hike or time in the garden, consider changing clothes and rinsing off. Pollen loves to cling to fabric and hair.

4. Vacuum Like You Mean It

Vacuuming once or twice a week with a HEPA-equipped vacuum cleaner can make a big difference. Pollen settles in rugs, furniture, and curtains, so make those part of your cleaning routine too. For an extra level of clean, consider using a steam cleaner on soft surfaces.

5. Bring in the Green Wisely

Some houseplants can help purify indoor air, but others might aggravate allergies. Skip the highly fragrant or pollen-heavy varieties, and opt for air-cleansing champs like spider plants, peace lilies, or snake plants. And always check for mold buildup in the soil, which can trigger symptoms.

Spring doesn’t have to mean months of misery. With a little planning and some tech help, you can keep pollen outside and reclaim the fresh, healthy air your home deserves.

Rebate Programs for Connecticut Home Improvements

If you’ve ever thought about renovating your home but you’re conscious about the planet, it’s worth making sure you’re up to speed on some of the rebates and incentives offered by EnergizeCT. As conscientious consumers, making smart decisions about your home remodeling while doing good for the planet is always a great idea. Here are some of the programs available this summer:

• Heat Pump: there are big savings for people looking to upgrade their heat and air conditioning. Work with a qualified contractor for your equipment and installation and you can get up to $15,000 in combined incentives.

• Pool Pumps: a summer of swimming is always fun but maintenance? Not so much. If you’re in the market for a new pool pump, Eversource customers can get a rebate of up to $100. The offer says you can save up to $290 a year in energy costs since the new ones use up to 18 percent less energy than a standard pump.

• Air Purifiers: these became a hot item after COVID and they continue to be popular amongst homeowners. You can snag $40 off a qualifying unit through the program and save money long-term too. ENERGY STAR® certified air purifiers are more than 25% more energy-efficient than standard models

• Dehumidifiers: during the summer months, I dump my basement dehumidifier twice a day. Excess moisture is a real problem in many homes and it can lead to mold and mildew if not dealt with. The average dehumidifier costs about $300 but you can get up to $25 off per qualifying unit with this incentive program

• Insulation: If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know how important having enough insulation is in the home. In addition to warmer winters and cooler summers, insulation is also a valuable improvement upon resale. You can get up to $1.70 per square foot for your insulation project which includes both batts and blown fiberglass. 

• Boilers and Furnaces: both of these essential appliances have a 20-year lifespan so if you’re coming to the end of yours, taking advantage of the rebate is a good idea. You can get up to $750 back if you choose an energy-efficient model and there is financing available too. 

• Thermostats: I love being able to set and adjust the temperature of my house from anywhere and it’s great for the planet too. Choose a Smart thermostat like Google Nest and get an $85 instant rebate. Plus they estimate energy savings of up to $180 on electric and $565 on gas.

Smelly Basement? Odor Isn’t Your Only Problem

A lot of people think that the moldy, musty smells in a basement are par for the course and that having a space that’s underground is going to stink regardless of what you do to change it.

Sure, basements are prone to high humidity, which can get into your clothes, furniture, and other storage, as well as the furnace filter. But what happens when the smells get so bad that they start to seep into the house above? That’s when it’s time to get the moisture out and protect your home from dampness that can cause a lot more trouble than just a funky smell.

One of the best air dehumidification and purification units I’ve seen is by a company called Aerus.  They produce a system which uses NASA technology to remove pathogens, pollution, contaminants, and even pet dander from the air. It can work within an hour and is a great solution to get rid of that nasty mold smell. But without a solution to get rid of the moisture, the odor, and the mold, will keep coming back.

At this point, it’s time to dehumidify the basement. Most homes want to keep their humidity level at 50% or lower, but in basements, the average humidity can often be higher than 80%, which is when mold and mildew can flourish. A dehumidification system will work to draw the moisture out of the air and into a holding tank, which often has to be dumped down a drain as often as daily depending on how quickly it gets filled. By removing the water from the air, you’re removing the odor-causing moisture and bacteria that allow mold to grow in the first place.

Finally, it’s time to purify the air. Overly humid areas attract a lot of bacteria, which is what causes the smell in the first place. That bacteria can live in walls and spread into your fabrics, furniture, and storage. By killing the bacteria in the air, you will remove contaminants that not only stink, but can also cause or irritate allergies, asthma, and immune system disorders.

When shopping for a basement air control system, be sure to look for a unit that has the EnergyStar seal, and make sure that you pay attention to the capacity of the air filtration as it pertains to your room size. If you have a big space with a lot of moisture, you might want to consider a unit that has a self-draining system to save your back and your patience.

Regardless of what kind of system you use, the air quality in your home should be taken seriously. If your kids are coughing or have allergies and you find yourself having difficulty breathing at home, it might be worth a call to your local contractor for an air quality inspection.
