Five Home Trends for 2022

Chelsea O'Donnell

With 2022 shaping up to be like the years proceeding it, people will be looking for ways to create an environment that goes beyond just livability as they spend more time at home. This year, practicality will dominate how we think about our space, with focuses on consumption, comfort, and function rising to the top of our at-home wish lists. So what’s ahead for 2022? From throwback color palettes to transformer-inspired rooms, here’s what will dominate interior design in the new year.

Sustainability

Global conversations about climate change have many of us thinking about how we can waste less and make our homes friendlier to the environment. From insulation and energy-efficient windows to smart appliances and solar, the next generation of homeowners are investing in sustainability that both save the planet and reduces our personal energy consumption and spending.

Multi-Functional Spaces

Rooms that are dedicated to a certain function will get an upgrade as people look for ways to enjoy their favorite activities at home. An underused dining room may become a home gym, yoga studio, office space, or homework zone. Furniture that folds and storage that does double duty will be popular to ensure spaces can be functional without feeling cluttered.

Comfort

Spending more time at home means cozy and comfortable will be major factors in how we approach interior design. Curved furniture, warm paint colors, plush fabrics, and greenery will all dominate as homeowners move away from monochromatic tones and straight lines. Things will start to feel a bit like the 70s with modern shag, smooth velvet, and rich shades of earthy brown and green taking center stage.

Air Quality

It’s not the most exciting trend on the list, but people will finally start paying more attention to the air inside their homes. From high-quality filtration systems to roof ventilation that reduces mold and mildew penetration, homeowners will be looking at ways to improve both the health of their home and that of their family.

Outdoor Living

From lounge furniture to firepits and sunshades, making an investment in outdoor living will be a major trend in 2022. With families spending more time at home, the opportunity to create additional space that can be enjoyed by all will be a smart spend. My tip? If a big outdoor project such as an in-ground pool or new patio is in your future, call those contractors now. Demand will be high as the weather starts getting warmer.

On Trend at Home with the Color of the Year

Chelsea O'Donnell

If you’re like one of the millions of people forgoing a vacation this year, you might instead be looking for ways to make your home more comfortable, fresh, and even appealing to potential buyers. You’re not alone: according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau report, home centers, hardware stores, garden centers, and building materials suppliers have seen close to a 25 percent increase in sales from last year alone. Recent research from Consumer Specialists and the Home Projects Council found that 57 percent of homeowners put an emphasis on home improvement during the first three months of COVID-19. As the pandemic continues and the colder weather sets in, more and more of us will have time to focus on making those improvements that we keep putting off.

One of the most popular upgrades that people usually enjoy doing themselves is painting which just also happens to be a fantastic project for fall. The weather is cool enough for the paint to dry quickly, but not so cold that leaving windows open for a day becomes unbearable. Indoor painting can be tedious but it’s also a job that will give your home a major facelift with a little time and effort.

With that in mind, the question then becomes, “what color should I paint my room?” This is, of course, a very personal choice, but with the real estate market booming and many people looking at potentially listing their home in the near future, choosing something that’s trendy and modern is an option worth considering.

Around this time of year, the major paint brands unveil their “Color of the Year”, a hue that's often chosen for its likeability, longevity, and how it captures and enhances interior design forecasting for the future. The first paint company out of the gate is Sherwin-Williams, which announced that Urbane Bronze is their Color of the Year for 2021. Equal parts trendy and timeless, the deep organic shade was chosen for both its connection to nature and the warmth it provides when incorporated into a home sanctuary.

According to Sherwin-Williams, “Now more than ever, our homes have become the backdrop to our lives, reminding us that the moments worth cherishing have always been right in front of us. As we're looking to create the ultimate retreat for reflection and renewal, we're turning to a hue whose natural simplicity and nature-inspired energy cultivate a sense of calm from the ground up.” Say that three times fast.

If dark paint colors aren’t your style, Urbane Bronze can be used as an accent with warmer neutrals such as a popular Modern Gray or the company’s Messenger Bag, which offers a slightly more khaki feel.

Wondering what your other options might be? Stay tuned: Benjamin Moore will be making their Color of the Year announcement on October 14th.

Trend Alert - Skylights Are Making a Comeback

Chelsea O'Donnell

Lately, I have had a lot of requests from homeowners who want to cover up their skylights. Once enjoyed for extra sun and brightness, people are becoming increasingly worried that skylights let too much heat and air escape and they believe that covering them over will be less costly than replacing them. While skylights were once the cherry on the top of a contemporary design, they now seem to be falling out of fashion. So what’s the deal on this once must-have home trend? Let’s take a closer look.

Residential skylights became popular several decades ago as people craved more natural light-filled spaces, especially in home styles with high ceilings. The luxury of being able to see the clouds became a bit of an interior design status symbol and their popularity skyrocketed. But today, as homeowners are having to replace their 30-year roofs, the idea of skylights aren’t as appealing as they used to be. In fact, many people think that closing their skylights up would be cheaper than replacing them. Unfortunately, what many homeowners don’t realize is that the work involved in properly covering a skylight is actually much more of an expense than it’s worth.

Today, there are tons of new options to make skylights more versatile than ever before. Many now come with solar panels to maximize energy efficiency and some also offer inclement weather sensors, enabling them to close automatically when the first raindrop hits. Speaking of closing, one of my favorite features of a skylight is the ability to let fresh air in, which contributes to a home’s balance of moisture and overall ventilation. This also enables humidity and stale air to be released, creating a more comfortable natural air flow.

Many people who once loved the idea of skylights now complain that they can’t control the light, which is luckily a problem of the past. Today’s blinds include total blackout and filtering options which are often controlled remotely through solar batteries that don’t need to be hard wired. This gives homeowners much more flexibility in terms of controlling the light that comes into their homes, making skylights a fully customizable feature.

Lastly, of course, there is the question of energy efficiency. About 10 years ago, a law was passed allowing homeowners to receive a tax credit on the purchase and installation of renewable technology products, which means that certain skylights might get you a solar energy rebate of up to 30%. Of course, it’s important to do your homework to ensure that the product you're considering will qualify before you make the purchase.

So before you go trying to patch up the holes in your roof and ceiling, have a look at all the new options available for skylights. Between the versatility, energy efficiency, and the beauty of natural light, this once popular and nearly dying trend is getting ready to see a major resurgence.
